What Is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach designed to address and heal the effects of trauma on the body and nervous system. Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, a renowned psychologist and trauma expert, SE focuses on the physiological and bodily responses to trauma. The approach is grounded in the understanding that traumatic experiences can become stuck in the body, leading to a range of physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms.

SE aims to release the trapped energy and tension associated with trauma through gentle and mindful exploration of bodily sensations. By carefully attending to bodily sensations, individuals can gradually process and discharge the energy that may have been frozen during the traumatic event. This process can lead to a reduction in symptoms such as anxiety, hypervigilance, and physical pain, allowing individuals to reclaim a sense of safety and well-being.
